The relationship between opera and literature is as old as opera itself. Firstly, because part of the opera – the libretto – is itself literature, and because many librettos derive more or less directly from pre-existing plays, novels or short stories, with many operas inspired by Greek and Latin classics, Shakespeare, Goethe, Schiller, Victor Hugo, Pushkin or Maeterlinck, to name just a few examples.
We will revisit some key moments in this long history, with a focus on the interactions between opera and literature in the post-Wagnerian era, which in turn formed the basis for new conceptions of musical dramaturgy developed from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century.
