Life as it is, with its direct, brutal and explosive vibe possessing art in its entirety. This is the principle of verismo: musical sound serving real emotion. Beautiful, timbral high notes make way for shrill, chilling screams. The singing closely accompanies a more colloquial language with music that heralds the film soundtrack, via the evocative force of the plot's dynamic. The artificiality of opera en route to real life. The trajectory of a movement that started with Bizet's "Carmen" and became prolific in extraordinary repertoire, such as Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and Leoncavallo's Pagliacci (the latter beginning with a manifesto of the verismo movement itself), the operas that begin this year’s edition.
