Performance by Gustavo Sumpta
Commissioned by Operafest and based on Canto V (Adamastor) from the epic poem "Os Lusíadas" (The Lusiads), Tormento is a cantata performance with music by composer Nuno da Rocha for female choir, other instruments and electronics. Led by Gustavo Sumpta, it celebrates half a millennium since the birth of Luís Vaz de Camões.
After the success of his performance in Forças Ocultas at last year’s Operafest, multifaceted artist Gustavo Sumpta focusses his attention on one of the greatest names in world literature and poetry. The founder of modern Portuguese, the beacon of the country’s culture, Camões is a fascinating, controversial, passionate, adventurous, fearless figure who told our story, a tale of the discoveries, of life, the human condition, the world, and one of the most fascinating and tragic myths of the great Lusitanian epic.
