In the inedited cycle and in a first collaboration with Culturgest as a programming partner of Operafest 2025, under the theme of "forbidden love", the national premiere of chamber opera "Julie" (2007) is proposed – a masterpiece of the 21st century, by the Belgian composer Philippe de Boesmans (1935-2022), based on the play "Miss Julie" by the Swedish playwright August Strinberg.
On the eve of Saint John's Day, Julie seduces the count's valet, her father, on the same night that her engagement is broken off. In a struggle between classes and sexes, in which the strongest social bond loses, Julie evokes female emancipation, rebellion and despair, challenging the limits of her class and sex, by seducing and manipulating the servant Jean who, after all, has very well-defined plans for her future, unexpectedly reversing the situation with a tragic outcome.
A powerful reflection on what moves human beings, on what imprisons and liberates them, with extraordinary musical virtuosity and colour, starring the charismatic French mezzo-soprano Julia Deit-Ferrand, with staging and set design by German director Daniela Kerck, recently acclaimed for her remarkable staging of Puccini’s "Turandot", which is making its Portuguese debut here. The musical direction is by maestro Bruno Borralhinho, accompanied by the ensemble Beyra, in a co-production with Artway.
