Another great classic with a new partner, staged at the epicentre of the capital, the open-air amphitheatre of Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. Once again, the piece adheres to the Basic Instinct theme, but this time in a palatial background. We’re talking about Don Giovanni, by the brilliant W. A. Mozart, with Lorenzo da Ponte’s masterful libretto telling us the tale of the serial seducer, aided by his faithful servant Leporello, who became a victim of his own scheming.
The nobleman Don Giovanni has thousands of lovers all over the world: young, old, fat, thin, blonde or brunette, experienced or novice. Being a woman is qualification enough for the predator not to resist the Basic Instinct of seducing and cheating them. After one of his conquests goes awry, Don Giovanni accidentally kills the father of one of his victims, who returns as a ghost to drag him into hell. Madness or divine punishment, the performance features the energy and provocation of actor and director João Pedro Mamede in a new interpretation of this myth. Under the musical direction of conductor Pedro Carneiro, the top-notch national cast is led by Columbian baritone Christian Luján, all accompanied by the Orquestra de Câmara Portuguesa.
