Luís Rodrigues

Baritone Luís Rodrigues studied at the National Conservatory and the Lisbon School of Music, distinguishing himself early on in national and international competitions, including the RDP Young Musicians Prize, the Luísa Todi Competition, the Concours-Festival de la Mélodie Française (France), and the PoulencPlus Competition in New York. He also received the Bordalo da Imprensa Prize for Classical Music.

Throughout his career, he has established himself as one of Portugal's leading opera singers, performing a wide-ranging repertoire at the country's principal venues. At the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, he has sung roles including Ping (Turandot), Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress), Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde), Sulpice (La fille du régiment), Don Profondo (Il viaggio a Reims) and Gianni Schicchi (Gianni Schicchi). In other productions, he has appeared as Semicúpio (Guerras do Alecrim e da Manjerona), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Don Giovanni (Don Giovanni), Leporello (Don Giovanni), the High Priest (Samson et Dalila), Ramiro (L’Heure espagnole), Marcello (La Bohème), Giorgio Germont (La traviata), Iago (Otello), the title role in Rigoletto, Escamillo (Carmen), Dulcamara (L'elisir d'amore), Yoshio (Hanjo), Eduard (Neues vom Tage), Tom (The English Cat), the Old Doctor (Vanessa), Arsénio (La Spinalba), and Buonafede (Il Mondo della Luna by Avondano), at venues including Teatro São Luiz, Teatro Aberto, Culturgest, the Belém Cultural Centre, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Casa da Música, and the Porto Coliseum.

He has also taken part in the world premieres of operas by the Portuguese composers António Pinho Vargas, António Chagas Rosa, Nuno Côrte-Real, Vasco Mendonça and Eurico Carrapatoso.

His discography includes several recordings, notably the operas Le Donne Cambiate (Marco Polo), and La Spinalba and Il Mondo della Luna, the latter two recorded with Os Músicos do Tejo for the Naxos label.
