Hugo Cabral Mendes

Hugo Cabral Mendes, born in 1999, trained in dance at Projeto Quorum of the Quorum Ballet Academy. He is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Choreographic Creation and Professional Practices at the Lisbon School of Dance.

Since 2018, he has worked as a performer with artists including Raimund Hoghe, Aldara Bizarro, Diana Niepce, Daniel Matos, Miguel Moreira, Marco Martins and Fernando Troya.

As a performing arts creator, he has toured the children's production A Maior Flor do Mundo, co-created with dancer Inês Gomes, since its premiere during the José Saramago Centenary celebrations in 2022.

He made his solo choreographic debut in 2023 with O SER INUMANO at the Cumplicidades Festival (Lisbon), followed later that year by O Campo das Cebolas at Musibéria, Serpa. He also contributed two choreographies to Ball Modern at Culturgest Lisbon as part of its community programme.

In 2024, at the invitation of The Gate, Marvila, he presented the installation Cartas para a Nuvem. That same year, he premiered the solo Cartas de um Bailarino para a Nuvem in Catalonia at L'Obrador in Deltebre.

He is currently touring his latest work, This is Only About Dance ou Cartas para a Nuvem, which premiered in March 2026 at TeatroCine Torres Vedras, concluding the Cartas para a Nuvem trilogy begun in 2024.

He is currently preparing his new creation, No Inferno Também se Bebe Café, scheduled to premiere in April 2027, while continuing his collaboration with artist Angélica Isenarda. Their most recent project, Não Era Sobre Isso, Era Outra Coisa, premiered in July 2026 at Galeria Passevite in Lisbon.

Hugo's artistic research focuses on the experience of living in a state of falling, exploring the relationship between pain and the ground, as well as the queerisation of the male body through reflections on fraternity, equality and freedom.
