Marta Carreiras
Born in Lisbon in 1975, she studied Artistic Studies at the António Arroio School of Arts before graduating in Stage Design from the Lisbon Theatre and Film School (ESTC). She later completed a postgraduate degree in Theatre Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon.
She made her professional debut as a set and costume designer in 1997 with Teatro Meridional. Throughout her career, she has created more than 120 stage and costume designs, collaborating with a wide range of theatre, dance, music and multidisciplinary companies.
Between 2012 and 2016, she served on the board of the Portuguese Association of Scenography and, in 2015, was co-curator of the Official Portuguese Representation at the Prague Quadrennial, together with José Manuel Castanheira and Rui Francisco.
Alongside her artistic career, she has maintained an active teaching practice in Set and Costume Design, lecturing at institutions including the University of Évora (undergraduate programme) and ESAD.CR (Master's programme).
In 2017, she co-directed the production Pedro e o Capitão with theatre-maker Romeu Costa. In 2021, she was awarded a research grant from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), through which she developed the stage production Jogos de Obediência, premiered at the São Luiz Municipal Theatre in 2022.
Since 2024, she has shared the artistic direction of the company A Small Mexican Chihuahua with theatre-maker Martim Rodrigues.
She is currently pursuing a PhD in Theatre Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon and is a research fellow of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
