Alberto Sousa
Portuguese tenor Alberto Sousa, born on the island of Madeira, graduated in Vocal Pedagogy from the University of Aveiro, where he studied with António Salgado, before completing a Master's degree in Opera at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London under Laura Sarti.
After graduating, he remained in London for twelve years, during which he performed more than forty leading operatic roles. His repertoire includes principal roles in La bohème, Gianni Schicchi, Rigoletto, Don Carlo, Maria Stuarda, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Lucia di Lammermoor, Faust and Simon Boccanegra. As a concert soloist, he has also performed major choral works including Verdi's Requiem, Rossini's Stabat Mater and Petite Messe solennelle, Puccini's Messa di Gloria and Beethoven's Missa solemnis.
His international engagements include a Bel Canto concert tour in Japan, a European tour of Haydn's Orlando Paladino, his debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona in Mozart's Requiem, and serving as cover for the title role in Shostakovich's The Nose at the Royal Opera House, London.
Since returning to Portugal in 2020, Alberto Sousa has appeared in Rossini's Petite Messe solennelle with the Madeira Chamber Choir, the modern premiere of Totti's Te Deum with the Chorus of the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, Griolet in Offenbach's La Fille du Tambour-Major at the Teatro São Luiz, Piangi in the Portuguese tour of The Phantom of the Opera, and Goro in Puccini's Madama Butterfly at Operafest Lisboa.
He currently teaches singing at the Conservatory – School of Arts of Madeira.
