Frank Schönwald

Frank Schönwald (born in 1983 in Seebad Bansin, Germany) studied Stage Design under Professor Raimund Bauer at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg. During his studies, he worked as an assistant to Bert Neumann on productions directed by Frank Castorf at the Volksbühne Berlin and collaborated with Andrea Schmidt-Futterer, Adriana Braga-Peretzki and Anna Viebrock on productions for the Salzburg Festival, Théâtre National de l’Odéon Paris, Hamburg State Opera and Thalia Theater Hamburg.

In addition to his work as a costume designer, he has created stage designs for Theater Osnabrück, Theater Lüneburg, Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin and Kampnagel Hamburg.

As a costume designer, his credits include Alles Schwindel at the Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin, nominated for Costume Design of the Year 2017/18, Nora at the Grand Theatre Tianjin, directed by Victoria Meirik; Die Fledermaus, Agrippina (later revived at the Sofia Opera) and Carmen at Opera Halle, where he began an ongoing artistic collaboration with director Walter Sutcliffe, as well as Die Feen at the Meininger Staatstheater and Tannhäuser at the Korea National Opera in Seoul. He also maintains an ongoing artistic collaboration with director Yona Kim.

His upcoming engagements for the 2026/27 season include Simon Boccanegra at Nationaltheater Mannheim and Chunhyang at the National Theater of Korea in Seoul, both directed by Yona Kim.
