Created by the dramatist and poet Tirso de Molina, the mythical Don Juan is a seductive libertine who leaves a trail of broken hearts behind him, before being plunged into hell by the hand of death itself. This figure’s influence has been considerable, reaching beyond the literary genre from whence it came, affecting many generations of great writers and poets. Spanning literature, poetry, theatre, opera and cinema, as well as psychology, this tale is fascinating because it’s a paradigm of the eternal seducer who is addicted to the type of conquest that torments amorous relationships, forever in the shadow of betrayal. Special focus on its operatic versions.
